Report by Goran Momiroski: "Turkey Opposes Erga Omnes"

Ankara is undermining the Greek erga omnes [one name for general use].  In Ukraine yesterday Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu informed Macedonian President Ivanov of the Istanbul government's firm position.

[Turkish Prime Minister] Erdogan's government will not alter its name stand at any cost, even if Macedonia accepts the Greek proposal for all the states that have recognized us under our constitutional name to recognize us under our potential new name.  The Turkish foreign policy creator over the past seven years, who has made Turkey a global player, an influential factor in the Middle East, and Europe's only link with the Middle East upheavals, seeks that the dispute be resolved on the basis of international standards.

"Our position from the very beginning has been that all the states are entitled to their own name and right to self-identification, which is why Turkey supports your constitutional name and recognizes you as the Republic of Macedonia in all the international organizations.  This can be seen from all the documents, too.  I hope that this issue will be resolved peacefully and that Macedonia will join the EU and NATO under its constitutional name," the Turkish foreign minister stated.

In addition to economic ties, Turkey advocates the promotion of political friendship into a strategic partnership by including Macedonia into the regional energy projects, primarily the Turkey-run gas pipelines that go from the Asian continent to Europe through Greece.
Davutoglu, who is respected in Washington, Moscow, Brussels, and Teheran for his strategy of zero problems with the neighbors, agreed with Ivanov that the Balkans cannot experience real prosperity as long as all the states refuse the principles of constant political dialogue at the highest level, unobstructed economic cooperation, and respect for multicultural features.

"We had an excellent meeting with Mr Ivanov.  We share the same views on the Balkans and the bilateral issues.  I admire his intellect, because he is a promoter of peace, multicultural cooperation, and security..  We share the same positions on the future and the past.  I plan to pay a visit to Macedonia soon," the Turkish foreign minister said.
According to the influential US magazine Foreign Policy, Davutoglu is one of the so-called contemporary Kissingers and is included in the list of the four most influential politicians worldwide who work behind the scene, alongside former Singapore Prime Minister Lee Kwan Yew, Saudi Prince al-Faisal, and Brazilian Foreign Minister Celso Amorim.
